Play release one: grip end stays outside the left hip
The instructor measures the club's release just after impact by where the grip end points. For a low, crisply-struck chip he plays what he calls 'release number one', where just after impact the grip end is outside the left hip rather than fully released past it, keeping the loft down and the leading edge down. Thinners tend to over-release instead.
