Dump the basket drill to shallow and beat a slice

To stop slicing and get rid of a steep downswing, the coach uses a 'dump the basket' drill: hold a range basket or a basketball with both hands kept parallel and the basket vertical, as if you are going to catch something in it. In the backswing you dump the basket over your shoulder - to the right, clockwise, for a right-handed player - which starts the forearms rotating. He says doing this turns the club path from out-to-in into in-to-out so you become a drawer of the ball and are no longer chopping.

Try it

  1. Grab a basket or a basketball - something where you can keep your hands parallel to each other.
  2. Hold it like you're going to catch something in it, so it's perfectly vertical.
  3. In the backswing, dump the basket - dump the water over your shoulder.
  4. For the right handed player, you're dumping it to your right, clockwise.

Why this context matters

Range drill using a ball basket as a training aid; done first without hitting balls.
